Lest our readers think that culture is just now coming to our town, be it remembered that these dancing girls were rehearsing for a performance of "Pooh Corners". Left to right they were Jean Gil bert (Smith), Betty Ann Lester and Joyce St. George (Partello) and they were students in the Tap-Pat School of Dance, for which Pat Arrington (Pittenger) was the instructor. The date was May 28,1952. Dredging Continued from page 2 of the property owners here that the increase in flow velocity by the wid ening and deepening and increasing the volume of water flowing seaward in the channel could be directly re lated to the serious erosion problem we have been experiencing on Bald Head Island. "An earlier study supported this belief by showing a positive correla tion between the periods of erosion and the location and size of the chan nel dating back to the mid-1800s." Martin, however, remains cogni zant that cooperatior with the corps got the island's badly eroded south beach renourished last winter when maintenance dredging was done on the riverchannel. The federal govern ment, through the corps, picked up half of that tab. "Your recent contribution in a renourishment program here has been remarkable in providing us with a resource which all can enjoy. We are anxious to protect this valuable rib bon of sand." On Bald Head’s east beach two weeks ago, in the midst of a bluefish blitz, a bystander saw a springer spaniel crash into the surf, nab a bluefish and bring it ashore. Given that much information, islanders have been trying to find who trained the spaniel, because they want their dogs able to do that But more information came to light for us Monday. The spaniel, Gus, had accompanied Bob and David O’Keefe on a fishing expedition, and when one of the O’Keefes beached a blue and tossed it back into the shal lows Gus thought it was fair game for him. That was the blue which was caught, and that’s how. Meanwhile clear at the other end of the island we found last week that the mallard drake in the marina can fly. This is a bird we’ve noticed since spring, when it appeared someone had installed the male and two female mallards there as pets. While the two hens met with harsh ends the drake subsisted through the summer on tourist-tossings and whatever grazing was attached to marina pilings and docks. We thought he’d been pinioned, because never was he seen in flight, but the other evening when it was time for him to get to the other end of the marina he took off with a loud quacking and flew. Earlier we suggested here that whoever put him in the marina to start with might bring in some more companions next spring. We expect now for him to be gone from the marina in short order, but hope that he’ll be back in the spring with consort of his own choosing. The Samantha Lin, a huge and lovely motor yacht which lay at anchor off the foot of Atlantic Avenue for an evening and part of a day last week, was some sight, and she’s wowing them now in Wilmington. A spokesman with the U. S. Customs office in Wilmington said Monday that the vessel, reportedly built for an owner in this area, had to stop here under the yellow quarantine flag until she received customs clearance. Though the vessel had sailed from Tacoma, Wash., she’d passed through the Panama Canal, and that counted as a visit to a foreign port. Thus customs clearance was required. The intracoastal cruise ship Mayan Prince will be docking at the South port city pier sometime around 3 p.m. Saturday, says Joann Wesson, Southport 2000 executive director. Voyagers are expected to come ashore to shop and mingle with the natives. VILLAGE TRAVEL & CRUISES Midgett & Associates ’ ' ? :%»&»(>£ What a SUITE Deal! r U r 4-day Cruise Suites HCarnival $£££.
